The talismanic grey galloped his way into racing legend in a career that saw him grace the winner’s enclosure on 34 occasions, amassing £654,066 in prize money in the process.

“Desert Orchid died peacefully in his stable at 6.45 this morning,” his former trainer David Elsworth said.
