Amateurs in trouble at Fontwell

TWO amateur jockeys received hefty bans for taking the wrong course at Fontwell Park yesterday.

Amateurs in trouble at Fontwell

Polly Gundry on How Ran On, the 3-1 joint-favourite, and Andrew Tinkler riding 20-1 chance Smart Guy in the George Gale & Co Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase were in first and second place respectively when they veered on to the hurdles course when going into the bottom bend on the first circuit having jumped just four fences.

They were clear at the time and the remainder of the five other runners headed by Tullons Lane continued on the correct course.

Tullons Lane maintained his lead to land the spoils at 25-1.

At the subsequent inquiry the stewards found Gundry and Tinkler in breach of Rule 156.

In taking the wrong course the stewards were forced to suspended them for 10 days on dates to be notified to them by the Jockey Club.

Jump jockey Jim Crowley could be out of action for a month after fracturing a shoulder when riding out at Middleham yesterday.
