Grey Desert can improve enough to land maiden

THE opening meeting of the year at Tipperary this evening has little or nothing to recommend it and, again, wagers should be kept to the minimum.

Eddie Lynam's once-raced Grey Desert is no more than a hopeful choice to land the nap in the Kop Maiden for colts and geldings.

He did show some promise on his debut at the Curragh last month, finishing fifth of 23 in the contest won by the John Oxx trained, and well-touted, King In Waiting.

The selection was eventually beaten a whopping sixteen and a half lengths, but did run prominently for most of the journey and can only improve!

There are two interesting newcomers in the field, Dermot Weld's Officer Krupke, a son of Daylami, and John Oxx's Takestan, who is by Selkirk. Market moves for either would obviously have to be respected.

The Arakan and Ballyhane Stud EBF Fillies Maiden looks very moderate. Certainly, those who have already run don't have much to recommend them.

Perhaps, Dermot Weld's first-timer, Queen Of Rap, will oblige. Again the market will be all important regarding the prospects of the daughter of Alhaarth.

John Oxx's Raydan had a big reputation last season and seems very much the most likely market leader in the Tipperary Racecourse Supporters' Club Maiden.

But he proved disappointing in both his outings and, as a son of Danehill, there is no guarantee will handle the surface.

Maybe Charlie Swan's Crooked Throw, absent since going down by a short head to Appleblossom Pearl over seven furlongs at Roscommon in July, will provide the answer.

Cliffs Of Duneen, the only three-year-old in the field when a creditable fifth to Alone He Stands at the Curragh on Sunday, gets the nod in the www.tipperaryraces.ie Race.
