Collins the new Curraheen Park racing manager
It really is a case of tradition being maintained. The last two racing managers at Cork moved to the track from Youghal and so Collins is completing the hat-trick.
A native of West Cork, Collins has always been involved with greyhounds. After leaving school he worked for a while in the kennels at Multnomah Track in the US and when he returned to Ireland he spent five months at Hull.
Then he got the chance of taking over as manager at Thurles and spent two and a half years there before moving to Dublin for a year where he moved between Shelbourne and Harold's Cross. He has been at Youghal since April 2002 and has done a splendid job at the East Cork track.
He said yesterday: “I will be sorry to leave Youghal, I've enjoyed it here very much and I must say they're the best owners and trainers I have ever dealt with. The Supporters Club were outstanding to me and Bertie Lupton was fantastic. They all have huge pride in the place and they have achieved a lot here. But the opportunity to move on to Curraheen Park is the right thing for me just now”.
Collins will take over at Curraheen Park as soon as a replacement is in place at Youghal.
