Frost alert for cross-channel turf meetings

AS the forecast big freeze looms, prospects for racing on turf today in Britain hinge on early-morning inspections at Sedgefield and Leicester.

Frost alert for cross-channel turf meetings

An unfavourable forecast has persuaded officials at Sedgefield to have a precautionary look at 7.00am.

Leicester will inspect 30 minutes later and, although the track was raceable yesterday, clerk of the course Nick Lees was expecting a cold night.

Today's other meeting is on the all-weather track at Southwell, where clerk of the course Jon Pullin is not expecting problems.

Meanwhile, Huntingdon’s clerk of the course Michael Prosser is hoping the forecasters have got it wrong ahead of the meeting there tomorrow.

“If the forecast is accurate, we are going to be in a spot of bother. We have sheeted down the areas we perceive to be vulnerable, but you can do no more than that,” he said

Tomorrow's meeting at Hexham is subject to a precautionary inspection at 10.00am today.

The official going is soft, heavy in places, part frozen.
