Climate and Mega the top dogs

THERE were no major surprises when the Greyhound of the Year awards were presented at Galway's Radisson Hotel in Galway last night.
Climate and Mega the top dogs

Derby winner Climate Control was named Dog of the Year and owners Aidan O'Regan and Kevin Smith received the trophy from Minister John O'Donoghue.

Trainer Seamus Graham and breeder Eilish McCann also received their trophies.

Mustang Mega, runner-up to Climate Control in the Derby final, and to Axle Grease in the Oaks final, was named Bitch of the Year and owners Alex McKenzie and Stephen Bourke were on hand to accept the trophies.

If there was a slight surprise it came in the Marathon category where the leading British stayer Shelbourne Star got the nod ahead of Topofthebest and Taming The Tiger.

Shelbourne Star had established herself in Ireland before being sold to England.

Owner Roy Felmingham, trainer Brian Clemenson and breeder John Marks accepted the trophies.

Dalcash Black beat off Kilmalady Boy and Ballymac Minnie to win the Sprint award.

This flying tracker is owned by the Boro Five Syndicate and is trained by Jacqueline Lawlor.

The Dunphy brothers, Michael and Sean, from Portlaw accepted the award for the Brood Bitch of the Year, thanks to the prowess of their bitch Droopys Kristin.

Our own correspondent Michael Fortune was inducted into the Hall Of Fame in recognition of his lengthy service to the sport.
