Mirific looks set to go one better

IT would be silly to desert John Oxx, who is enjoying a rich vein of form, and his once-raced Mirific gets the nap to land the Giles and Co Auctioneers’ Maiden at Tralee today.

Mirific looks set to go one better

The Perugino gelding will be partnered by Fran Berry, in the absence of the suspended Johnny Murtagh, and is taken to step up on his three and a half lengths second behind stable companion Blatant at Naas earlier in the month.

Mirific performed with plenty of promise, ranging up as a possible threat to the favourite in the straight. He tired through the last furlong, however, but is surely entitled to come on a bundle for the experience!

As well, of course, Blatant gave the form a major boost when taking the Carlsberg Ruby Stakes here yesterday.

If Oxx’s Akash gets into the Tattersalls Ireland Median Auction Maiden, he’s first reserve, then the son of Dr Devious can do the business.

He finished a creditable second to Aidan O’Brien’s highly rated The Great Gatsby at Galway, before disappointing slightly when beaten a neck by Kurbaan at Leopardstown.

Fitted with blinkers for the first time, Akash would get preference over Great Compton, third behind Dolmur at Gowran Park.

And, perhaps, Oxx might also supply the solution to the Billy Naughton/Citroen Handicap with Dear Catch.

She stepped up on previous efforts to score very cosily, by two lengths from Oriental Ben, at Leopardstown, although a hike of 12lbs is an obvious minus!

Feature event is the Denny Havasnack and if Dermot Weld’s Quality Team, who has a lot in hand at the weights, puts his best foot forward he will make short work of these rivals.
