"The King Edward at Royal Ascot is the logical next step for him," said Tregoning of the winner. "I couldn't believe it when he ran so badly at Newbury, but he swallowed his tongue and the tongue strap today obviously did the job."
Gatwick landed a popular gamble as he took the £75,000 totesport Stakes.
The 9-4 favourite was always travelling strongly under Richard Quinn and quickened out of the pack over a furlong out. Dancing Lyra stayed on best of the rest, but Gatwick always had something in hand and scored by a length and a quarter.
The win was providing Quinn with the middle leg of a treble and trainer Mick Channon a double.
The successful handler said: "We will see what happens but he is still a baby. It's always fatal to start saying it, but I think he has got a lot of improvement still in him.
"He was only half-racing there and he was on and off the bridle for the first three or four furlongs.
"I always thought he was a good horse. There's not a lot of him, but he's a proper little thing."
Attentions for Gatwick who is owned by a syndicate which includes Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson will now be switched to Royal Ascot.
Quinn's trio had been initiated when he brought 40-1 winner Highland Reel down the wide outside to lead in the final strides and score by half a length in the Mitsubishi Diamond Stakes.
And the 3463-1 treble was wrapped up when 25-1 chance Gortumblo made a winning debut for Dominic ffrench Davis in the Avtrade Maiden Auction Stakes.
Goodwood's season had got underway with a win for the Channon-trained Naahy and apprentice Sam Hitchcott in the opening Marriott Goodwood Park Hotel Conditions Stakes.
Hitchcott, who claims 3lb, deserves plenty of the credit for the 5-1 shot's success after he rode some of his peers to sleep with a vintage performance from the front.
Gradually increasing the tempo from the three-furlong pole aboard his mount, a confirmed front-runner, he never looked like being seriously challenged as his rivals got in the way of each other in behind.
Unlucky Suggestive stayed on to take second but was still a length and three-quarters down at the winning post.
