EMMA LAVELLE believes handicap debutant Self Defense has a realistic chance of upstaging Rooster Booster in the Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury on Saturday.

The seven-year-old receives 17lb from the reigning champion hurdler, who had Self Defense 15 lengths back in fourth place at Cheltenham last March.

Self Defense shoulders 10st 9lb in the £125,000 showcase handicap hurdle in what will be his last race before bidding for Cheltenham glory again.
