Carberry hailed as a ‘genius’ after Screamer success

MICHAEL HOURIGAN, a trainer who has not been slow to criticise jockeys in the past, described Paul Carberry as a “genius” after the brilliant rider had partnered the Limerick handler’s The Screamer to win the Smithwicks’ Handicap Hurdle at Listowel yesterday.

The mare, more often than not, has disappointed in the past, but Carberry got a real tune out of her here.

Poc Fada went on going to the fourth last, but The Screamer ranged up as a big danger early in the straight. Carberry launched his challenge two out and the daughter of Insan swept past Poc Fada at the final flight to score snugly by a length and a half.
