Witness equals world record

JOCKEY Felix Coetzee celebrates on Silent Witness (right) after the six year old equalled the world record of 16 consecutive victories when he took first place in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize in Hong Kong yesterday.

The Tony Cruz-trained sprinter joins the two great North American horses Cigar and Citation on the 16-mark, with all of his wins having been at Sha Tin racecourse in the former colony.

South African Felix Coetzee, who has ridden him on each occasion, was in the saddle again and always had the gelding in contention in the six-furlong contest.

Silent Witness kicked for home with around a furlong to go, quickly pulling several lengths clear and only had to be kept up to his work by Coetzee to hold Tiber by a length and three quarters.
