HISTORIC MOMENT, a prolific winner for Cork owner Liam Burke and trainer John Linehan, has been put down after breaking a leg in a race at Limerick on Monday night.

The staying star was running in a prep race for the upcoming St Leger when disaster struck close to the line and connections had no option but to act on veterinary advice.

The dog gave Burke a great lift a few weeks ago when, on an emotional night, he won the final of the Droopys Stud 575 at Cork. Last month Historic Moment was a leading player in the televised Ladbroke 600 at Shelbourne Park, running the race of his life when finishing third to superstars Satellite Flight and Like A Shot. By an amazing coincidence, tragedy also struck Derby winner Like A Shot last week when he lost a short battle against illness.
