Phipps quits as security chief

JEREMY PHIPPS resigned from his position as director of security at the Jockey Club last night, conceding in a letter to senior steward Christopher Spence that his role had become ‘‘untenable’’ and that he had caused ‘‘embarrassment, for which I apologise most sincerely’’.

He has paid the ultimate price for his contribution to the BBC’s Panorama programme ‘‘The Corruption of Racing’’, when he come under intense pressure after featuring in a covertly-taped conversation - with his predecessor Roger Buffham, who turned whistle-blower on the show which attacked racing’s regulators and claimed racing was ‘‘institutionally corrupt’’.

The Jockey Club accepted Phipps’ resignation ‘with great regret’.
