Lord Maizey can rule

NIGEL TWISTON-DAVIES has an enviable record in the big handicap chases and he has another nice prospect who could develop into a leading contender for the major prizes in Lord Maizey.

Lord Maizey won three point-to-points and a bumper in his native Ireland but did not look anything out of the ordinary on his British debut at Chepstow last month when trailing home a well-beaten fourth behind Ask Henry.

Twiston-Davies said the gelding had not acclimatised in time for that outing and the run is best forgotten.

And so it proved next time at Leicester when the six-year-old was a completely different proposition.

A grand chasing type, Lord Maizey firmly erased memories of his previous modest effort by trouncing Deoch An Dorais by 10 lengths in a two-mile maiden chase.

He jumped well, made up his ground to lead three out and powered clear despite still looking inexperienced in front.

Lord Maizey steps up to an extended two miles and seven furlongs in the Rutland Water Novices’ Chase back at Leicester today and the longer distance can bring about further improvement from him. He is napped to score again and in doing so book his ticket for the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
