Fat Budgie takes flight to equal track record

FAT BUDGIE, having shaved the track record in the heats the previous week, equalled the best time for the standard trip in the second semi-final of the Rochestown Park Hotel Stakes at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

Fat Budgie, who had no less than 37 spots in hand of his rivals on the clock, started a remarkably generous 4-6 and those who traded at those odds had few worries as he bombed out, quickly had matters well in hand and was in cruise control from early in the back straight as he beat Beardys Prince by six and a half lengths in 28.14 to equal Coolmona Dave’s track record for the trip.

He hasn’t been done any favours with a trap five draw in the final as he has shown a liking for the inside in his races so far, but he has so much in hand on the clock that few will want to oppose the Paul Hennessy trained dog in the decider.

The draw for the final is: 1 Beardy’s Prince, 2 Captain Peacock, 3 Miles of Fun, 4 Chinook Wind, 5 Fat Budgie, 6 Jeffs Cyclone (w).

The trap draw, with Cashmans betting, for the final of the Paudie Coughlan 525 at Youghal on Friday night is: 1 Il Capitano 7-2; 2 Opel Shiraz 6-1; 3 Rathvilly Park 10-1; 4 Zigzag Guest 8-1; 5 Teddys Dancer 7-2; 6 Castlemary Socks 13-8.
