Oompa Lumpa too strong for Rakes rivals at Mallow

OOMPA LUMPA, owned in partnership by well known English punter Harry Finlay and Skibbereen’s Denis O'Driscoll, landed the Rakes Of Mallow all-aged stake when coming from behind to take the turn by two lengths from Run Like Baros at a very well run meeting at Ballymagooly yesterday.

Conditions were tough, but everything ran like clockwork and it was a credit to all concerned.

Oompa Lumpa, winner of his Trial Stake last year at Blarney, was an early Derby casualty but made amends in style here to claim the €1,500 to the winner and the Walsh Cup.

Make A Point, owned by the Pistol Knight Syndicate made up of four Englishmen, Mike Rowe, Garry Partridge, Dave Brennan, Richard Coward and Abbeyfeale man Jerry Griffin, who also trains him, booked his place in the Derby when he got the flag on a just up over the John Condon Stan De Game in an unsatisfactory final as the hare ran to the far side.

The Reserve Oaks Trial stake went to the Tom Aherne, Glounthaune owned and Donal Leahy handled Skelligs Autumn who impressed all through and came from behind to lead two lengths in the decider against the Casleisland owned Dromore Snowy.

The Inter Club went to Max Direct who ran for the promoting club and who took the opening turn by a length from the Castletownroche representative Knockturnal Mike.
