ON the day the British Horseracing Board threw its weight behind the Jockey Club’s controversial new policy on mobile phones, Frankie Dettori and several of his weighing-room colleagues left the confines of York racecourse to make and receive calls.

The Jockey Club has introduced restrictions on the use of mobiles on course amid security concerns after a high-profile court case revealed that they had been used to pass on information.

Dettori rode in the first race, but with no mount in the second he headed for the exit to make calls leaning against the wall just outside the main gate.
