Chink of light in gloom surrounding showjumping

IN the gloom that has surrounded show jumping, there appeared a chink of light this week. Only time will tell if things get any brighter.

Chink of light in gloom surrounding showjumping

In the meantime, the Showjumpers’ Club must be commended for convincing the warring and concerned parties to attend a clear-the-air meeting. Notable among the attendees were riders Jessica Kürten, Harry Marshall, Cian O’Connor and selectors chairman Taylor Vard. The other riders present must also be applauded for coming to Dublin (though, it could be argued it was in everyone’s interest to do so).

While ultimately it failed to break the deadlock, the fact they were willing to meet in one room was, in itself, a success. Continuing on a positive note, there was “unanimous” agreement on one thing. However, it wasn’t that the proposal that emerged from the meeting - that change was required and that one person be given sole responsibility to select Super League teams - is, necessarily positive. Others, such as the Show Jumping Association of Ireland, must decide that. No, the important thing is that all concerned found common ground.
