Daisy delivers in style

YOU LITTLE DAISY continued the successful run of champion owner J. P. McManus when opening her account over hurdles in the Elphin Maiden Hurdle at Roscommon last night.

Conor O’Dwyer has struck up a winning partnership with trainer Christy Roche in recent weeks and gave You Little Daisy a confident ride before driving her clear on the run-in to beat Toutan Khamon and Adonia.

Johnny Murtagh, whose book of rides at Royal Ascot includes Kalaman, travelled west to rides Scarsdale in the Lecarrow Maiden and this well backed favourite looked a likely winner early in the straight.

But, inside the final furlong, she was unable to raise her effort and had to settle for third place behind Conspiring, another winner for in-form Tadgh O’Shea which got the better of Certainly Brave by the minimum margin.

Second to Russian Comrade at Navan on Friday night, the Francis Flood trained Birchall made a quick re-appearance and justified favouritism in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.

Davy Condon looked full of confidence as he tracked the leaders early in the straight but had to work hard in the closing stages to get Birchall home a half length in front of the flattering Tribal Princess.

Veteran campaigner Willy Ever, trained by John Bowles and ridden from Fran Berry, returned to winning form in the Tulsk Handicap while 16/1 shot Rocking Ship caused the shock of the evening, appropriately in the Keenan Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle, scoring for trainer Joanna Morgan and Joey Elliot.
