Cross-channel jump racing set to resume

HOPES are high that both today’s cross-channel jumps meetings will go ahead after yesterday’s action at Plumpton was frozen off.

Catterick report no problems, while Leicester are optimistic despite calling a precaution inspection at 7.30am ahead of an all-chase card.

The Midlands track was “totally raceable” yesterday and the forecast for today is favourable.

“We are very hopeful,” said clerk of the course Jimmy Stevenson.

The going is described as soft, heavy in places.

The other meeting today is the all-weather fixture at Lingfield.

However, National Hunt racing tomorrow could be affected, with Folkestone holding an inspection called for 11am today.

Although prospects are described as “about 50-50”, there is still a covering of snow on the ground.

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels said: “We currently have an inch of snow on the track. It is melting, but we also have a bit of frost in the ground.

“We have called an inspection tomorrow because the course is currently unraceable and when it melts the ground could be very heavy. It is hard to determine the going at the moment. Before the snow came last week it was soft, heavy in places.

“Prospects are about 50-50, or just a touch better.

“We haven’t got a hard frost forecast over the next two days, but we could get light rain or snow. It depends which way the wind blows.”

The other jumps meeting tomorrow, at Wetherby, looks set to go ahead, with clerk of the course Christopher Tetley saying: “Everything seems to be OK at the moment. The forecast is wintry, but there is no standing water and I don’t anticipate frost being a problem.”

The going is described as soft.

Yesterday’s meeting at Plumpton was abandoned because the course was frozen.
