Colonel’s Betfred Gold Cup run in doubt

COLONEL FRANK, one of the leading fancies for the Betfred Gold Cup, is likely to miss the Sandown race due to a leg problem.

The eight-year-old sustained the injury when coming down two fences from home in last month’s Racing Post Chase at Kempton Park.

Trainer Brendan Powell will not make a final decision for at least another week, but he is leaning towards roughing Colonel Frank off for the season.

The Winchester handler explained yesterday: “After his Kempton fall one of his hocks swelled up and when it was X-rayed we found a haematoma in there.

“He’s still in light work, but before long I’ll have to up the tempo with him at home and then we’ll know where we stand. But I wouldn’t mind if we drew stumps and looked forward to next season’s Hennessy with him.”

Before his Kempton fall Colonel Frank had been in flying form, notching up a hat-trick and finishing second to the highly progressive Oneway.
