Mermaid Island can fulfil her debut promise
Dermot Weld’s once-raced daughter of Mujadil will, hopefully, handle the surface and if she does then it should be plain sailing!
Weld will be well aware of the testing conditions and the fact he has chosen now to reintroduce her looks significant.
Mermaid Island hasn’t been seen since performing with a lot of promise at Leopardstown some three months ago.
She was noted doing all her best work at the end of that seven furlongs, going down by a short head and two lengths behind Redrightreturning and the more than useful Belle Artiste.
Feature event is the valuable Listowel Races Supporters’ Club Lartigue Hurdle and a hopeful vote here falls on Victram.
He is down near the bottom of the weights, obviously because his form over flights is quite moderate.
But Victram has run well on the flat through the summer and was impressive when scoring over ten furlongs at Roscommon last week.
The mud-loving Kompressor holds leading claims in the opening Kerryman Handicap over six furlongs.
He won and finished third at this meeting a year ago and ran a bit better than his final position might suggest when eighth behind Mr Flatley at Tipperary five days ago.
Florida Belle, who hinted she might be an improved sort when taking a Clonmel bumper last time, gets the nod in the McCarthy Insurances’ Maiden Hurdle.
