Kiln can fire-up punters

THURLES this afternoon houses a decent programme, which has the makings of a real old battle between layers and punters with only one handicap on the card.

Feature event is the valuable Grade Three Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle and this promises a cracking contest, bringing together some very smart horses.

The one they all have to beat is the Bowe family's Sweet Kiln. She has, admittedly, had a long campaign and this track may well prove less than ideal.

But Sweet Kiln seems to be keeping her form reasonably well and there was little wrong with her latest effort at Naas last month.

The six year-old was beaten two lengths and the same into third spot behind shock winner, Black Apalachi, and the very smart Homer Wells.

That was just one of a series of decent efforts by the selection and a repeat of her latest performance will see her go close, at worst.

Adrian Maguire, who enjoyed his first success as a trainer at Limerick a week ago can double his tally, and provide us with a winning nap in the process, with Hardwick in the Bumper.

The former pointer was a trifle unlucky on his racecourse debut when beaten three parts of a length into second spot by Tom Taaffe's highly regarded newcomer, In The High Grass, at Downpatrick.

The moderate Desert Island is the choice in the Thurles Racecourse Maiden Hurdle. Moderate he may be, but he still seems to have the most solid credentials.

Peter Casey's charge finished a well beaten third behind Court Leader at Leopardstown on Sunday and has clearly come out of that contest in good shape.

The Broadway Flyer At Greentree Stud EBF Beginners Chase is best left to Enda Bolger's Darby Wall.

He was beaten four lengths into second spot by Twist 'N Shout on this course last month and should be well suited to stepping up another two furlongs in trip.

Skibb was in front in that contest when departing three out, but Darby Wall was closing at the time and can prove the stronger.
