Olympic storms home in six-year-old maiden

EOIN GALLAGHER is experiencing a fine season and the Conna amateur partnered a double at the Carbery Foxhounds point-to-point at Darrara near Clonakilty yesterday evening.

Olympic storms home in six-year-old maiden

Gallagher's brace was initiated by the facile success of Olympic Storm (7/2), whom he also trains, in the five and six-year-old geldings maiden.

Always travelling sweetly, Olympic Storm was produced to strike the front at the final of the fifteen obstacles and the son of Glacial Storm scorched clear to triumph by a length from Shuffling Pals.

Olympic Storm is owned by Angela McCarthy, wife of The Beeches Stud stallion master Bobby McCarthy, in partnership with Gallagher and his younger brother and fellow amateur rider Eamonn.

"He is still backward and he should make a nice horse next year," said trainer/rider Gallagher.

Carrigaline-based Ivor Kingston provided Gallagher with his second winner of the evening aboard Dunworley (4/1) in the closing adjacent hunts maiden. Sporting the colours of Padraig O'Donovan from Bishopstown, Dunworley eased clear from the final fence to beat favourite Out The Black by two lengths.

Donickmore (4/6), trained under permit by Jerry O'Keeffe near Dungourney, recorded his fourth success of the season when capturing the open lightweight under Brian Hassett. This was Donickmore's eleventh 'pointing' victory and he will now be prepared for a summer handicap chase campaign.

The Danny O'Connell-trained Lord Haven (6/1) secured a marvellous leap at the final fence in the opening winners of one and this was partly responsible in the son of Mister Lord accounting for the staying-on Sweet Citizen by a half length with teenager Eddie Power.

The Tim Townend-trained Red Moppet (8/1) provided Carigtwohill amateur John Beamish with his third hunt racing victory of the season by dispensing with Carmels Cottage by a length in the mares maiden.

Derek O'Connor meanwhile continued his amazing run by combining with the absent Robert Tyner to collect the seven-year-old and upwards geldings maiden with Celtic Ross (11/10). Owned by Nora May Wycherley of the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarberry, Celtic Ross struck the front at the last and the victorious grey had five lengths to spare over Alpha Castle at the line.
