Australia is set to host the first-ever women's International Rules game in either June or July this year.

According to AFL.com, "the final details are still being hashed out between the AFL and the GAA," but it's understood Ireland and Australia will meet in at least one fixture.

The last time Ireland faced Australia in an International Rules fixture was contested by the men in 2017 - with a Gaelic football - but this clash is set to be played under Australian Rules and with the Sherrin football.

There are over 40 Irish players currently plying their trade in the AFLW, with back-to-back AFLW Grand Final winners, North Melbourne, boasting four from these shores, Blaithin Bogue, Vikki Wall, Amy Gavin Mangan and Cork's Erika O'Shea.

The Irish influence on the AFLW is further illustrated by the inclusion of Brisbane's Jennifer Dunne, Carlton's Dayna Finn, Hawthorn's Aine McDonagh, North Melbourne's Bogue and Gold Coast's Niamh McLaughlin in last season's All-Australian team, while former Tipperary footballer and AFL player Colin O'Riordan is now the Sydney coach.

It is envisaged that International Rules will be part of the AFLW's pre-season calendar, with players returning to training in May before the season kicks into gear in August.
