World Cup qualifier: Ireland 4 Wales 0

The Ireland men’s hockey team have secured qualification to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, ending an eight-year wait to return to hockey’s biggest stage.

The side secured an emphatic 4-0 win over rivals Wales, with a brace for Jonny Lynch and goal each for Louis Rowe and Matthew Nelson sealing the win.

In a perfect start, Jonny Lynch found the roof of the net from Ireland’s first attacking phase, with Lee Cole playing a long ball up the pitch to Jeremy Duncan who fed Lynch to finish.

A period of calm defensive duties followed for Ireland as they absorbed some Welsh pressure and patiently waited for openings to present themselves, but clear chances were rare and Ireland closed out the first quarter a goal up.

Ireland remained in control in the second quarter, Jeremy Duncan performing his signature move of pulling the ball through his own legs inside the Welsh circle to win the first penalty corner of the match. Lee Cole went direct but was denied by Toby Reynolds-Cotterill.

Wales, though, were getting some positive outcomes from their high press, the best of which leading to a half-chance for Benjamin Francis whose eventual effort went over the bar.

Ireland weathered the Welsh purple patch and made great use of a period in the attacking third. Clever thinking from Louis Rowe saw him take a free hit quickly and play a one-two with Matthew Nelson before slotting the ball into the back of the net to double Ireland’s lead.

Ireland’s dominance continued into the second half, as they set themselves up on the halfway line and pinned Wales back. Fergus Gibson played an inviting ball into the circle from the right flank towards Lynch who tipped the ball under Reylonds-Cotterill for his second.

Louis Rowe almost matched Lynch’s tally shortly after, picking up the ball expertly and turning into space in the circle, but he saw his slapped effort on goal go just over the bar. Jeremy Duncan was up next to strike a goal, but he found himself reaching for the ball and couldn’t make clean contact.

Ireland’s fourth would come before the end of the third quarter after an exceptional bit of interplay left Matthew Nelson one on one with the keeper to lift the ball neatly into the back of the net. Ireland cruised through the closing stages of the game, to book their ticket to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Ireland will play France in the Final on Sunday (6:45pm) with an opportunity to end their campaign with a perfect record.

Before that the Ireland women look to replicate the men’s success in their own semi-final, facing Australia at 9pm on Saturday evening.
