Charlie Smyth has signed a three-year contract with NFL team the New Orleans Saints.
The kicker has played three regular season games for the Saints since the team cut Blake Grupe in November. Smyth was elevated from the practice squad for each of those games, an option an NFL team can only take three times.
Smyth's agent Paul Sheehy confirmed on social media that his client had signed the contract. Smyth added: "Gotta keep it rolling! Delighted to sign on here in New Orleans!"
Last week, the 24-year-old from Mayobridge in Down kicked the game-winning field goal for the Saints against the Carolina Panthers.Â
Smyth has successfully kicked four of his five field goal attempts for the Saints, and made all five of his extra point attempts.Â
The former Down goalkeeper is set to make his fourth consecutive appearance for the Saints against the New York Jets on Sunday. The Saints face the Tennessee Titans in their final regular season game a week later.Â
Smyth came through the NFL's International Player Pathway Programme. He was signed by the Saints in 2024.
