The race favourite, Niels Laros of the Netherlands, only finished fifth while Olympic silver medallist Josh Kerr suffered an injury on the penultimate lap and trailed home 14th and last in 4:11.23.

For Andrew Coscoran, there was residual pride amid the obvious pain – his 12th-place finish in the world final simply not what he wanted. 

For everyone else, there was absolute shock – the men’s 1500m again proving itself as the most intriguing, engrossing and utterly unpredictable event in athletics.
