In the 1980s Bob Stephens and Jasper McElroy appeared in the newspapers of Cork more than the lord mayor. But after seven seasons here they went back to the States, never to return. Until this past week. Kieran Shannon caught up with them to see how life and Cork has treated them.

It turns out all that time we had his name wrong.

Back when he was forging a legendary reputation on the playgrounds and high school scene of Chicago, the first couple of syllables of his surname were pronounced similar to those of the current Arsenal football manager’s first name. The way that guy is Mikel Arteta, he was known as Jasper Mikel-roy.
