Starting in June this year, Bahrain was suspended from all World Athletics Series events for 12 months, but was still allowed to bring up to 10 athletes to the Paris Olympics, with two of the eight athletes who competed winning medals.

His race may or may not be run, with Thomas Barr set to make a call about his future in athletics in the coming weeks. But whatever path he chooses, the 32-year-old will be remembered for having walked the right one.

An Olympic finalist and European bronze medallist over 400m hurdles and a European champion in the mixed 4x400m, Barr has many achievements he can reflect on with pride, but the Waterford athlete is just as well liked and respected in his sport for how he has conducted himself off the track.
