She wrote a piece of Irish Olympic history just by toeing the line, Fionnuala McCormack becoming the first Irishwoman ever to compete at five Olympics, but of course being who she is – a ruthlessly driven competitor – she wanted more.

The 39-year-old Wicklow woman crossed the line 28th in the women’s Olympic marathon in Paris this morning, clocking 2:30:12, a race where Dutch star Sifan Hassan wrote her own Olympic history, winning gold in 2:22:55 to add to bronze medals over both 5000m and 10,000m.
