He’s 31 now, eight years removed from the personal best of 47.97 recorded when finishing fourth in an Olympic 400m hurdles final in Brazil, and the exit door is creaking suggestively as Thomas Barr contemplates the end.

If that all sounds like an athlete ready to hang up his spikes then he has some news for you. Yes, retirement is in Barr’s head. This might be his last year on the circuit, but the Waterford man is far from done yet and the approaching finish line has energised him if anything.
