Parts of the track on its riverside straight had been in poor condition for some time, with UCC citing “a rapid and significant deterioration” after it closed the track following an inspection earlier this month by its Building and Estates team.

In an email to track users, UCC’s Head of Sport Morgan Buckley explained that the university had “extensively explored the possibility of carrying out temporary repairs that would enable a reopening” in the short to medium term, but further examinations have revealed the track is “at the end of its term and an entire resurface is the only option available.”
