The race is 6km. The journey to Belgrade is over 2,000km. But rather than flying with her teammates to this weekend’s World Cross Country Championships, shooting across the skies in a couple of hours, Innes FitzGerald will go by land – a trip that will take a couple of days and involve no planes, but some trains and automobiles.

Madness? Perhaps. But the 17-year-old Brit sees method in it.
