The sweat had yet to dry on Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s forehead before he threw a jab. It was last August at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, and the Olympic champion had just lost a second straight world 1500m final to a Briton.

In Oregon a year earlier, he’d been out-kicked by Jake Wightman. This time it was Josh Kerr. Ingebrigtsen is many things, but the Norwegian is a not a good loser. After winning silver in Oregon, he said he was disappointed to lose to an inferior athlete in Wightman. In Budapest, he complained of illness and struck a similar tone about Kerr.
