Neptune Stadium has seen its share of amazing players and moments over the past 38 years and Keelan Cairns added to that lore on Saturday with a dramatic buzzer beater against Tralee Warriors to send Ballincollig to their first-ever Super League Cup final on a scoreline of 78-76. The defending league champions, led by Andre Nation (27) and Shawndale Jones (26) on offense were comfortable for three quarters of the game. Their offense ground to a halt though under incredible Warriors pressure led by Kieran Donaghy as the Cork side managed just 12 fourth-quarter points. The worry for Ballincollig has been the lack of a natural point guard and down the stretch that certainly looked to be a concern. Warriors didn’t shoot well, hitting just 6/24 from three and they couldn’t bully their way to second chance points as Ballincollig are one of the few teams with the size to control the boards. Tralee American Caleb Jordan did deliver with 28 but Jarvis Doles didn’t look fully right after a recent injury and Ryan Leonard was largely curtailed before a late injury that will worry Tralee for the league. Ultimately for the Kerry side it’s another semi-final that got away from them in Cork.
