Motors: Purcell and Browne win Cork Motor Club's Boggerage Rallysprint

On the first timed run Purcell set the pace and led Ovens driver Owen Murphy by 8.5s with McCann a further 2.4s behind in third, the latter reckoned he lost possibly two seconds off the start line

Waterford’s Andrew Purcell and his co-driver Andrew Browne (VW Polo GTi R5) took a start to finish victory in the Cork Motor Club’s Boggeragh Rallysprint near Nad. After four runs of the 5.6km gravel surface event they had 9.7s to spare over the Ford Fiesta R5 of the Monaghan/Inchigeelagh crew of Derek Mackarel/Eamonn Creedon with Cavan’s Stephen McCann/John McCabe a further 5.7s behind in third.

On the first timed run Purcell set the pace and led Ovens driver Owen Murphy (who had a re-run as he caught cars on his initial run) by 8.5s with McCann a further 2.4s behind in third, the latter reckoned he lost possibly two seconds off the start line. Monaghan’s Derek Mackarel (Ford Fiesta R5) was a fraction of a second further behind as Ray Breen (Ford Focus WRC) completed the top five. Cashel’s Pat O’Connell (Ford Fiesta R5) lost time when his spectacles fogged up and while he was able to manage without them, a misted windscreen then impaired his vision - he finished the stage in sixth place - 21s adrift of rally leader Purcell. Despite no intercom Monaghan’s Mickey Conlon (Ford Escort) led the two-wheel drive category.
