And over the weekend this crash was caused by a pedestrian walking straight out in front of a peloton travelling at more than 50kph.

The huge pile-up happened in the final kilometres of the opening stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China.

Video footage shows the man cross the road in the city of Xining. The first couple of cyclists manage to avoid him, but multiple cyclists soon collide with him, leading to a massive pile-up of riders and bikes.

Media reports indicate the pedestrian was detained by police and taken to hospital for treatment while a number of competitors were also injured in the crash.
