LISTEN: Minister of State for Sport wants media silence over Billy Walsh controversy after today

The Minister of State for Sport says he wants 'media silence' after today, regarding former Irish boxing coach Billy Walsh.

Last week Walsh resigned his position as head of Irish boxing’s High Performance Unit, saying the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) "have not made it possible for me to continue on in the role".

The joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications is meeting today to hear from the IABA and Sport Ireland.

Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring, says he hopes the accounts given at today's Oireachtas Committee will put this issue to bed once and for all.

“What I want to happen today - I want this complete today,” Ring said. “Whatever both of them have to say, I want it said.

“Because next week I’ll be bringing in the Sports council and I’ll be bringing in the IABA.

“We have to start picking up the pieces now for Rio and I want media silence after today.

“That mightn’t be easy but that’s what I want because, at the end of the day, when this is all over we have to prepare for Rio.

“Whatever issues are there we have to deal with them. And I will deal with them over the next few weeks.”
