Joe Ward makes it four Irish boxers in European quarter-finals

Four Irish boxers have now progressed to the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Bulgaria, as Joe Ward won his bout this evening.

Ward and Adam Nolan both won their last-16 contests today to join Michael Conlan and Dean Walsh in the last-eight of their divisions.

Ward breezed his way into the quarter-finals of the light-heavyweight division this evening after a comfortable victory over his Georgian opponent.

Nikoloz Selchniashvili rarely troubled Ward and received two public warnings as he fell to a 30-25, 30-24, 30-25 loss.

Earlier Bray fighter Adam Nolan produced an upset during the afternoon session when he beat his Russian opponent, who was the top seed in the welterweight division by unanimous decision.

The quarter-final schedule is:

56kg Michael Conlan (Ireland) v Frederik Jensen (Denmark)

64kg Dean Walsh (Ireland) v Nyeki Georgian (Hungary)

69kg Adam Nolan (Ireland) v Pavel Kastramin (Belarus)

81kg Joe Ward (Ireland) v Mikhail Dauhaliavets (Belarus)
