Cavendish claims world title

Britain’s Mark Cavendish won the men’s road race after a dramatic sprint finish at the World Championships in Copenhagen.

Cavendish moved out to the right of the pack after space was made by team-mate Stannard.

Once the Olympic 2012 gold hopeful hit the front, there was no stopping Cavendish as he became the first British rider to win the title since Tom Simpson in 1965.

Australia's Matt Goss was second, with German racer Andre Greipel third.

Cavendish's victory was made by a phenomenal effort from his Great Britain team-mates, who set the pace at the front of the peloton throughout the 266-kilometre race.

“It couldn’t be another result after the guys rode the way they did today,” Cavendish told British Eurosport.

“They took the race on from start to finish.”

The result on a course which suited Cavendish’s strengths as a sprinter was the culmination of three years’ planning by British Cycling.

“We put a plan together to bring the rainbow jersey back to Britain,” Cavendish added.

“I’m so, so proud.”
