Number one seed Wozniacki lost the opening set 6-4 to the Belgian, who is seeded sixth, but came back to win 4-6 6-4 6-4.

Jelena Jankovic, seeded third, had a much easier time in seeing off Christina McHale 6-2 6-0.

Shuai Peng, seeded 11th, ended the run of qualifier Sania Mirza, but only after coming from behind as she won 2-6 6-2 6-2, but number 12 Julia Goerges is heading home after losing 2-6 6-2 6-2 to Elena Vesnina.
