Zvonareva battles through

Second seed Vera Zvonareva survived a major scare at the Australian Open today before edging out teenager Bojana Jovanovski.

Zvonareva, who reached the final at the last two grand slams, looked in real danger when she was outplayed in the first set by the 19-year-old, but she hit back impressively to win 2-6 6-3 6-1.

Serbian Jovanovski is the youngest player in the top 100 and she showed her huge promise with a stunning first-set display which started with a double break to ease into a 4-1 lead.

Zvonareva responded but she could not prevent her opponent from edging ahead.

Jovanovski was playing in just her third major, however, and her inexperience showed as she relaxed and Zvonareva took full advantage, breaking for a 4-2 lead before clinching the set.

And, as so often happens, the decider was straightforward for the Russian, who took full advantage of a demoralised Jovanovski to secure a place in the third round.
