US Open champion Kim Clijsters was today ruled out for six weeks with a foot injury, ruining her build-up to the French Open in May.

The Belgian sustained the injury in her Fed Cup clash against Maret Ani of Estonia in Hasselt yesterday and was forced to pull out of today’s reverse singles after tests in a local hospital revealed she had torn a muscle in her left foot.

She was replaced in the Belgium side by former world number one Justine Henin, who went down in three sets to Kaia Kanepi.

The French Open begins at Roland Garros on May 23 but Clijsters is confident she will be fit to compete in Paris as she goes in search of her first French Open crown.
