The former world number one, chasing a fourth title after wins in 2004, 2005 and 2008, beat Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 6-3 6-1 in one hour and 14 minutes and will now meet Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic in the quarter-final.

Second seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain beat Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-5 6-2 to progress.

Verdasco will now play qualifier Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania, a 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 winner over Bjorn Phau of Germany.

Sam Querrey was a 6-4 6-4 winner over fellow American Taylor Dent to earn a last-eight clash with compatriot Michael Russell, who beat Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-4 7-5.
