Nicki Sorensen broke clear late on from a long-time breakaway group of seven riders to win Stage 12 of the Tour de France today.

The two-time national champion of Denmark, who rides for Saxo Bank, made his raid for glory with 5.5 kilometres remaining and could not be stopped.

Laurent Lefevre came home second, 48 seconds later, with Liquigas’ Franco Pellizotti third.

The peloton, including yellow jersey holder Rinaldo Nocentini, finished around six minutes behind the front seven.

It was Sorensen’s maiden Tour win in his 10th year as a professional.
