Ireland may have suffered boxing disappointment today at the Olympics, but the steeplechase semi-finals have gone spectacularly.

In the Women's 3,000m Steeplechase round 1 - heat 2, Roisin McGettigan has finished second, qualifying for final.

McGettigan was well placed in fourth, with five laps to go.

With two laps to go, McGettigan, Tatiana Petrova of Russia and Jessica Augusto of Portugal started to move away from the pack.

In the final lap, McGettigan and Petrova sprinted for the finish, with Petrova snatching victory in a time of 9:28.25 from McGettigan, who clocked 9:28.92.

McGettigan will now run in the final this Sunday at 2.30pm Irish time.
