Lindsay Davenport has pulled out of the women’s singles tournament at the Beijing Olympics because of a persistent knee problem.

The 32-year-old American sustained the injury in the build-up to Wimbledon and has not played since winning her first-round match at the All England Championships in June.

Davenport, who won the gold medal at the Atlanta Games in 1996, is still expected to compete in the doubles with Liezel Huber.
