Andy Murray advanced to the quarter-finals of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells by edging to a 7-6 (9/7) 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 over world number 20 Ivo Karlovic.

The 20-year-old’s tactics were exemplary, making it difficult for the 6ft 10ins Croatian to employ his preferred serve-volley game as he won four of five break points.
