British number one Murray beat his Swiss opponent Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets to claim victory in the final of the Qatar Open in Doha.

The 20-year-old from Dunblane recovered from a nervous start with a 6-4 4-6 6-2 win at the Khalifa Tennis Complex, scooping a £86,000 (€115,069) prize.

Murray received the congratulations of Scotland’s First Minister, who predicted that he would this year enter the world’s top five ranked players.

The sportsman is currently number 11.

Alex Salmond said: “Congratulations to Andy for a fantastic win.

“This is a great way to book in the New Year and I’m sure Andy will go on to establish himself as one of the top five players in the world in 2008.”

Murray beat world number four Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in the semi-final of the Open.

He was runner-up in last year’s competition.
